The assault came on May 27, begun by an artillery bombardment from 4,000 guns along a 40-kilometre front together with a gas attack. Hamilton Gordon’s IX Corps was virtually wiped out in the opening barrage. Then came an advance by 17 divisions of infantry commanded by Crown Prince Wilhelm and making rapid progress through the gap. They reached the Aisne in less than six hours, having broken through eight more Allied divisions, and by the end of the first day they had arrived at the River Vesle. After three days the Germans had taken 50,000 prisoners and 800 guns, and by June 3 they were within 90 kilometres of Paris.
